English Translation
That I love you more
than the falls of mountain streams,
this people now know,
for I think of you
without a moment's pause
Meaning
People have come to know that my love is fiercer than a mountain waterfall, for I think of you without a moment's pause.
Commentary
Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3016

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
The poet sings that a love fiercer than a waterfall has become known to others, because of constant thinking of the beloved. Taking up the waterfall of the preceding poem, it expresses love's intensity as surpassing a cascade.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "yamagawa no," means "of a mountain stream."
Line two, "taki ni masareru," means "fiercer than the falls," taking up the waterfall of the preceding poem.
Line three, "koi su to zo," means "that I am in love," with "zo" concluded by the attributive "keru" in line four.
Line four, "hito shirinikeru," means "people have come to know," and the poem pauses here.
Line five, "ma naku shi omoeba," means "because I think of you without pause," giving the reason through inversion.
