Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3034
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
The poet's heart burns with love, and on opening the door in the morning, mist hangs outside. One view holds that linking the heart's heat to the mist reflects the idea that sighs of grief turn into mist. From here a series of poems on mist follows.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "wagimoko ni," means "for my darling."
Line two, "koi subenagari," means "longing helplessly."
Line three, "mune o atsumi," means "because my heart burns," a hypermetric line of six syllables.
Line four, "asato akureba," means "when I open the morning door."
Line five, "miyuru kiri kamo," means "it is mist that I see," linking the heat in the heart with the mist that hangs outside.
