暁の朝霧隠りかへらばに
何しか恋の色に出でにける
Roma-ji

Akatoki no asagirigomori kaeraba ni nanishika koi no iro ni idenikeru

English Translation
Hidden as I was
in the morning mist of dawn,
yet all the same,
why is it that my love
showed itself upon my face
Meaning
I kept my love hidden like the morning mist at dawn, yet why did it show itself upon my face all the same?
Commentary
Book Twelve Expressing Thoughts through Things 3035

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Expressing Thoughts through Things"
The poet wonders why love, hidden like something veiled in morning mist, has nonetheless shown itself on the face. Continuing the mist of the preceding poem, it overlays being hidden in mist with keeping love secret.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "akatoki no," means "of the dawn."
Line two, "asagirigomori," means "hidden in morning mist," continuing the mist of the preceding poem and likening it to keeping love secret.
Line three, "kaeraba ni," means "on the contrary, instead."
Line four, "nanishika koi no": "nanishika" means "why," corresponding to the attributive "keru" in line five.
Line five, "iro ni idenikeru," means "has it shown on my face?", wondering at a love meant to be hidden appearing in one's looks.
