Kokoro naki ame ni mo aru ka hitome mori tomoshiki imo ni kyō dani awamu o

English Translation
How heartless it is,
this rain that keeps on falling;
watching for eyes,
my darling, so seldom seen,
I'd meant to meet today
Meaning
How heartless this rain is; I had meant to meet my beloved, so seldom seen for fear of watching eyes, at least today.
Commentary
Book Twelve Dialogue Poems 3122

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Dialogue Poems"
A man laments the heartless rain, for he had meant to meet, at least today, the beloved he seldom sees for fear of watching eyes. He answers the woman waiting in the rain in the preceding poem, explaining that the rain kept him away.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.

Line one, "kokoro naki," means "heartless."
Line two, "ame ni mo aru ka," means "what rain this is," and the poem pauses here.
Line three, "hitome mori," means "watching out for others' eyes."
Line four, "tomoshiki imo ni," means "my beloved, so seldom seen."
Line five, "kyō dani awamu o," means "I meant to meet her today at least," showing his regret at being prevented by the rain.
