Book Twelve Dialogue Poems 3123
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Dialogue Poems"
A man, unable to sleep alone, came to his beloved through the rain with his white sleeve held over his head as a hat. With the woman's reply in the next poem, it forms a question-and-answer pair.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "tada hitori," means "all alone."
Line two, "nuredo nekanete," means "I lay down but could not sleep."
Line three, "shirotae no," is a pillow word for "sode," sleeve.
Line four, "sode o kasa ni ki," means "wearing my sleeve as a hat."
Line five, "nuretsutsu zo koshi," means "I came, getting soaked," with "zo" concluded by the attributive "shi." Poem 3126 in this book ends with the same line.
