Book Twelve Thoughts Arising on Journeys 3141
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Thoughts Arising on Journeys"
On top of the sadness of travel, the poet has met a woman to love on the journey and foresees longing for her later. The meeting on the road only foreshadows the pain of parting.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "kusamakura," is a pillow word for "tabi," journey.
Line two, "tabi no kanashiku," means "the journey being sad."
Line three, "aru nae ni," means "and on top of that."
Line four, "imo o aimite," means "having met you," a woman met on the journey.
Line five, "nochi koimu kamo," means "how I will long for you later," the same final line as poems 2993 and 3160 in this book.
