Book Twelve Thoughts Arising on Journeys 3140
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Thoughts Arising on Journeys"
A woman, left behind by a man who has set out on a journey, realizes anew how deep her love was now that she feels its longing. It speaks of the depth of love discovered only after parting.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "hashikiyashi," is an exclamation, "ah, how dear."
Line two, "shika aru koi ni mo," means "such a love as this," a hypermetric line of eight syllables.
Line three, "arishi kamo," means "it was, after all."
Line four, "kimi ni okurete," means "left behind by you," a woman's poem after seeing off a man on his journey.
Line five, "kōshiki omoeba," means "when I feel such longing," the adjective read "kohoshiki" in the kana line.
