Book Twelve Poems Lamenting Parting 3188
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Poems Lamenting Parting"
A woman sings that once her beloved crosses the mountains trailing with morning haze, she will long for him until they meet again. Before his departure, she anticipates the longing that will follow.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "asagasumi," means "morning haze."
Line two, "tanabiku yama o," means "the mountains where it trails."
Line three, "koete inaba," means "if you cross and go," a hypermetric line of six syllables.
Line four, "are wa koimu na," means "how I shall long," and the poem pauses here. The same line appears in poem 3190 in this book.
Line five, "awamu hi made ni," means "until the day we meet," the same final line as poems 2854 and 3142 in this book.
