Book Twelve Poems Lamenting Parting 3189
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Poems Lamenting Parting"
The poet vows not to forget the beloved until they meet again in person, though mountains range a hundredfold between them. A variant gives the last three lines as "kakusedomo kimi o omowaku yamu toki mo nashi," making it a woman's poem.
The poet is unknown. Book Twelve, titled the second part of "Love Poems Exchanged Old and New," gathers love poems by people whose names have not come down to us, arranged by category.
Line one, "ashihiki no," is a pillow word for "yama," mountain.
Line two, "yama wa momoe ni," means "mountains a hundredfold," exaggerating the distance, like "momoe nasu" in poem 2902 in this book.
Line three, "kakusu tomo," means "though they hide you."
Line four, "imo wa wasureji," means "I will not forget my beloved."
Line five, "tada ni au made ni," means "until we meet in person," the same final line as poems 2846 and 2959 in this book.
