Book Fourteen Azuma Poems 3512
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Sōmon (Love Exchanges)"
People say they are united like a single peak, yet in truth, like clouds hesitating over the green peaks, the singer is not yet joined with the wife the rumor gives him. Frustration at the gap between gossip and reality is expressed.
It is one of the love exchanges and the third in the cloud sequence. It takes up "aonero ni tanabiku kumo no isayoi ni" from the preceding poem and uses the same words.
The poet is unknown. The Azuma uta are thought to have been sung among the people of the eastern provinces, and they are marked by plain, open-hearted expression mixed with local dialect.
First line, "hitonero ni": "Hitonero" is a single peak, a figure for being united.
Second line, "iwaru monokara": "Though it is said," with "monokara" concessive.
Third line, "aonero ni": The same word as the first line of the preceding poem: the green peak.
Fourth line, "isayou kumo no": The same word as "isayoi" in the preceding poem: the hesitating cloud.
Final line, "yosorizuma wa mo": "Yosorizuma" is a wife bestowed by rumor, and "wa mo" is exclamatory.
