Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3614
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Three poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Nagai Bay in Mitsuki District, Bingo Province"
He resolves to gather white pearls from the offing to show his wife when he returns home. "Shiratama" are pearls, and the poem holds his wish to delight his wife with a gift from his travels. Later, in 3628 of this book composed at Tama Bay, he gathers the white pearls of the offing but puts them back since there is no one to show them to, so that the same wish to show them to his wife reappears reversed.
According to the headnote, this is one of three poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Nagai Bay in Mitsuki District, Bingo Province. Nagai Bay is thought to be near Itozaki in present-day Mihara, Hiroshima Prefecture. The first of the three is a sedōka by the senior secretary Mibu no Udamaro; the author of this poem is not named.
First line, "kaerusa ni": "sa" is a suffix of time: when I return.
Second line, "imo ni misemu ni": "mu" is an auxiliary of intention: since I wish to show my wife.
Third line, "watatsumi no": "watatsumi" is the god of the sea, by extension the sea.
Fourth line, "okitsu shiratama": "okitsu" means of the offing, "shiratama" beautiful white gems, pearls. 3628 of this book uses the same phrase.
Fifth line, "hiriite yukana": "hirifu" is read "hiriu" and means to pick up; "na" is a final particle of one's own intention: I will gather them as I go.
