Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3615

Headnote: "Two poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Kazahaya Bay"
Seeing mist trailing over the offing of Kazahaya Bay, he surmises that his wife must be sighing for him. Answering 3580 of this book, composed by his wife at parting, "if mist should rise, know it for the breath I sigh," he sees the mist, just as she asked, as her grieving breath. Words exchanged in the parting poems appear before him as a real landscape on the journey, showing the fine construction of the sequence. The opening "waga yue ni" is also the same as the opening of 3586, in which the husband showed concern for his wife before departure.
According to the headnote, this is one of two poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Kazahaya Bay, thought to be near Kazahaya in Akitsu, Higashihiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture. The author is not named.

First line, "waga yue ni": because of me, showing that the cause of his wife's sighs lies in himself.
Second line, "imo nagekurashi": "rashi" is an auxiliary of grounded inference: my wife must be sighing. The poem breaks after the second line.
Third line, "Kazahaya no": Kazahaya Bay in Aki Province, thought to be near Akitsu in present-day Higashihiroshima.
Fourth line, "ura no okibe ni": "okibe" means the area of the offing.
Fifth line, "kiri tanabikeri": "ri" is a continuative auxiliary: the mist lies trailing. This mist is the ground for the inference of the second line, answering the mist as grieving breath sung by the wife in 3580 of this book.
