Commentary
Book Fifteen Poems of the Envoys to Silla 3616

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Two poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Kazahaya Bay"
Continuing from the preceding poem in seeing the mist as his wife's grieving breath, he wishes that the offshore wind would blow hard and carry the mist to him, so that he might be wrapped in it to his heart's content. It expresses the poignant wish to receive his wife's grief upon himself, at least as mist. Set against 3592 of this book, in which, on the point of departure, he begged the offshore wind not to blow fiercely, it forms a composition placing opposite wishes on the same offshore wind.
According to the headnote, this is one of two poems composed on the night the ship anchored at Kazahaya Bay, thought to be near Kazahaya in Akitsu, Higashihiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture. The author is not named.

First line, "okitsukaze": the wind from the offing, the same word as in the third line of 3592 of this book.
Second line, "itaku fukiseba": "se" is regarded as the irrealis of the past auxiliary "ki"; "seba" is a counterfactual condition answering "mashi" in the last line: if it blew hard.
Third line, "wagimoko ga": my dear wife's.
Fourth line, "nageki no kiri ni": he sees the mist of the preceding poem, 3615, as his wife's sighing breath turned to mist.
Fifth line, "akamashi mono o": "aku" means to be satisfied, "mashi" is counterfactual, and "mono o" an exclamation with an adversative turn: I could take my fill of it, the poem ends.
