Aoniyoshi narahito mimu to waga seko ga shimekemu momichi tsuchi ni ochime ya mo

English Translation
For one in Nara,
blue-earthed, to see, my dear friend
has marked out the leaves—
could they ever scatter down
and fall upon the ground?
Meaning
The autumn leaves you have marked out to show the one waiting in Nara—could they ever fall to the ground? Surely not.
Commentary
Book Nineteen 4223

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Two poems from a banquet on the third day of the ninth month"
Responding to Hironawa's preceding poem, it reassures him, worried about the showers: could the leaves he marked out to show the person in Nara, his wife, possibly fall to the ground?
Rephrasing Hironawa's "dear wife" as "one in Nara," Yakamochi takes up his friend's longing for his wife in the capital and encourages him—a considerate exchange fitting the banquet. The left note says, "The above poem was composed by the Governor, Ōtomo no Sukune Yakamochi."
The poet, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, was the son of the Grand Counselor Ōtomo no Tabito. From 746 he served as Governor of Etchū, living at the provincial headquarters in what is now Fushiki, Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture. He is regarded as the leading poet of the Nara period and is thought to have played a central role in compiling the Man'yōshū.

First line, "aoniyoshi," is a pillow word for Nara.
Second line, "narahito mimu to" (for one in Nara to see): "narahito" rephrases the "dear wife" of the preceding poem, referring to Hironawa's wife.
Third line, "waga seko ga" (my dear friend), refers to Hironawa.
Fourth line, "shimekemu momichi" (the leaves you must have marked): "shimu" means to mark, "kemu" is past conjecture, taking up "I'll gather the autumn leaves" of the preceding poem.
Fifth line, "tsuchi ni ochime ya mo" (would they fall to the ground?), is hypermetric; "ya mo" is rhetorical, closing with a firm denial.
