Asagiri no tanabiku tai ni naku kari o todomeemu kamo waga yado no hagi

English Translation
Where the morning mist
trails low across the paddies,
the wild geese crying—
could it hold them here, I wonder,
the bush clover of my garden?
Meaning
Could the bush clover in my garden hold back the wild geese crying in the paddies where the morning mist hangs low?
Commentary
Book Nineteen 4224

Headnote: none; the left note reads, "The above poem was composed by Empress Fujiwara at the time of an imperial visit to the Yoshino palace. However, the year and month are not certain. On the fifth day of the tenth month, Kawabe no Ason Azumahito recited it and said so"
The poem asks whether the bush clover of the speaker's garden can hold back the wild geese crying in the paddies where morning mist trails. It is filled with love for an autumn scene, hoping the bush clover is lovely enough to detain the migrating geese.
According to the left note, it was composed by Empress Kōmyō during an imperial visit to the Yoshino palace; the date is unknown, but it was recited in Etchū by Kawabe no Azumahito on the fifth day of the tenth month. It shows Yakamochi hearing and recording old poems from the capital while in Etchū.
The poet, Empress Kōmyō, was a daughter of Fujiwara no Fuhito and became consort of Emperor Shōmu, the first empress chosen from outside the imperial family. She is known for her devout Buddhist faith.

First line, "asagiri no" (of the morning mist), sets an autumn scene of mist rising in the morning.
Second line, "tanabiku tai ni" (in the paddies where it trails): "tai" means rice fields.
Third line, "naku kari o" (the crying geese), refers to geese come from the north, landing and calling in the fields.
Fourth line, "todomeemu kamo" (could it hold them back?): "kamo" combines doubt and wonder; the poem pauses here.
Fifth line, "waga yado no hagi" (the bush clover of my garden), ends on a noun, revealing last by inversion what might detain the geese.
