Book Twenty Frontier Guard Poems 4383
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Poems of the frontier guards sent in rotation to the provinces of Tsukushi in the second month of Tenpyō Shōhō 7, year of the wood sheep."
Making the ship ready on the shore of Tsu, at the hour of setting out, would I could see my mother: the poem sings of his feelings before sailing. According to the left note, it closes the poems presented by Taguchi no Ōto, escort officer of Shimotsuke. Like the poems before it, it sings of the moment of sailing, and it ends the Shimotsuke group with longing for his mother. Tashidemo is a dialect form of tachiidemu.
The author, Hasetsukabe no Taruhito, is recorded as a regular guard from Shioya District in Shimotsuke; nothing more is known of him.
The first line, "Tsu no kuni no," means the province of Settsu, which contains Naniwa.
The second line, "umi no nagisa ni," means "on the water's edge of the sea."
The third line, "funayosoi," preparing the ship for sailing, is a word also found in a Hitachi guard's poem.
The fourth line, "tashidemo toki ni," means "at the time of setting out."
The closing line, "amo ga me mo ga mo," uses me, "meeting," and the wishing mogamo: how I wish I could see my mother.
