English Translation
From now on I'll leave
the cherry blossoms to
the wind as it will,
for beneath the falling tree
I find that you have stayed

From now on I will leave the cherry blossoms to the wind—for beneath the tree where they fall, you have stayed.
Commentary
Book Three Spring Poems III 105

Headnote: "After the mother of Sukenobu had died, Lord Atsutada kept visiting that house; when he came as the cherry blossoms were falling and stayed beneath the tree, someone of the household sent this out to him."
Since he has stayed beneath the falling cherry, the poet says, from now on the blossoms may be left to the wind. Gratitude to Fujiwara no Atsutada, who kept visiting even after the death of the lady of the house, is entrusted to the falling flowers.
According to the headnote, Fujiwara no Atsutada continued to visit the house after Sukenobu's mother had died, and when he came at the time of falling cherries and stood beneath the tree, a member of the household sent out this poem. The next poem is Atsutada's reply, and the two form an exchange.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us.

The first line, "Ima yori wa," means "from now on."
In the second line, "mu" expresses intention: "I will not resist the wind that scatters the blossoms but leave them to it." The poem pauses here. The next poem, 106, takes up this line in its reply, "kaze ni shimo nani ka makasen."
The third line, "sakurabana," names the cherry of the house, now falling. The next poem also places "sakurabana" in its third line.
In the fourth line, "ko no moto" means "beneath the tree," where Atsutada stood.
In the last line, "keri" expresses a sigh of realization: "even beneath the falling flowers you have stayed," voicing her gratitude.
