Book Three Spring Poems III 116
Headnote: "Sent by a woman who had served at court, while living at a place called Isonokami, to a friend in the capital."
Living in a village hallowed and grown old, the poet laments that she cannot even see the flowers that bloom so brightly in the capital. Missing the splendid life of the capital where she once served, she confides to her friend the loneliness of life in a distant village.
According to the headnote, a woman who had served at court sent this to a friend in the capital while living at a place called Isonokami. Isonokami is a place in Yamato Province, home to the ancient Isonokami Shrine, and includes the area of Furu.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us.
In the first line, "kamisabu" means to grow venerable with age, pointing to the ancient land of Isonokami Shrine.
In the second line, "furi" is a pivot word joining "furi," growing old, and Furu, a place name at Isonokami. The preceding poem, 115, also uses "furinishi," and the same pivot word appears in "Isonokami Furu no yamabe" of 49 in Book Two.
The third line, "sumu hito wa," refers to the one who lives in that village, the poet herself.
In the fourth line, "niou" means for flowers to bloom radiantly, naming the blossoms in full glory in the capital.
In the last line, "dani" means "not even": "I cannot even see the flowers," expressing the loneliness of being far from the capital.
