Book Five Autumn Poems I 255
Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet says that as soon as he hears the evening cicadas, the day darkens, and as the pine cricket's name suggests, these days he only waits and thinks of the one he loves. Echoing "day's closing" in the evening cicada and "waiting" in the pine cricket, it expresses a love that waits each evening for the beloved to come.
From 254 to 261, this book sets eight untitled poems by Ki no Tsurayuki in a row, turning in order to the voices of autumn insects: the evening cicada, the cricket, and the pine cricket.
The poet, called "Tsurayuki," is Ki no Tsurayuki. A son of Ki no Mochiyuki, he was the leading compiler of the Kokin Wakashū and wrote its kana preface. He served as governor of Tosa among other posts, is known as the author of the Tosa Diary, and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
The first line, "Higurashi no," means "of the evening cicada," the same opening as the preceding poem, echoing "the day's closing."
In the second line, "kara ni" is a conjunctive particle meaning "as soon as": "as soon as I hear its voice." Like "koe kiku yama no" in the preceding poem, it uses "koe kiku."
The third line, "matsumushi no," means "of the pine cricket," with "matsu" echoing "to wait." It is the same as the first line of 251 of this book.
The fourth line, "na ni nomi hito o," means "you, only waiting as its name says," expressing that, after the pine cricket's name, the poet is one who waits.
In the last line, "kana" is an exclamatory particle: "these days in which I think of you."
