Omou koto arite koso yuke harugasumi michi samatage ni tachi na kakushi so

English Translation
It is because there is
something in my heart I go;
O haze of the spring,
do not rise to hide the path
and stand in my way as I go.
Meaning
It is because something weighs on my heart that I am going; O spring haze, do not rise up and hide the path, blocking my way.
Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Spring Poems 1017

Headnote: "For a screen for the High Priestess of Kamo in the fifteenth year of Engi, where a person makes his way through the haze into a mountain temple"
The poet says that he goes to the mountain temple because something weighs upon his heart, so the spring haze must not rise to hide and block the path. The headnote shows it was written for a painting on a screen made in the fifteenth year of Engi for the High Priestess of Kamo, depicting a person making his way through the haze into a mountain temple. Speaking in place of the figure in the painting, it voices an earnest longing for the Buddhist path as an appeal to the haze. It is a poem for the same screen as 1004 in this book.
The author, Ki no Tsurayuki, was the leading compiler of the Kokinshū, wrote its kana preface and the Tosa Diary. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "omou koto," means "something on my mind," sharing the same line with the first line of 1019 in this book, "omou koto."
Second line, "arite koso yuke," means "it is because of it that I go," with the binding particle "koso" resolved by the perfective form "yuke." The poem breaks after this second line.
Third line, "harugasumi," calls out "O spring haze."
Fourth line, "michi samatage ni," means "so as to block the path."
Final line, "tachi na kakushi so," means "do not rise and hide it," with "na ... so" expressing prohibition. It shares the haze that "rises and hides" with the final line of 1014 in this book, "tachikakusu kamo," pairing a poem that wonders whether the haze hides with one that begs it not to.
