Over Tago Bay
how deep the spring haze appears

Has the smoke of the salt fires
risen up and joined with it?

Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Spring Poems 1018
Headnote: "For a sliding-door painting at the house of the Koichijō Minister"
The poet wonders whether the haze looks so deep over Tago Bay because the smoke of salt-burning has risen to join it. The headnote shows it was written for a painting on the sliding doors of the house of the Koichijō Minister. Laying the smoke of salt-making fires on the bay over the spring haze trailing along the shore, it guesses at the reason for the haze's depth. The Koichijō Minister was a minister who lived in the Koichijō mansion, said to be Fujiwara no Morotada.
The author, written as "Yoshinobu," is Ōnakatomi no Yoshinobu. He served as chief priest of the Ise Shrine and, as one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber, took part in compiling the Gosenshū. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "Tago no ura ni," means "at Tago Bay" in Suruga Province, a famous poetic place by the sea.
Second line, "kasumi no fukaku," means "the haze lies deep," continuing the haze poems from 1014 in this book.
Third line, "miyuru kana," means "how it appears," with "kana" exclamatory. The poem breaks after this third line.
Fourth line, "moshio no keburi," means "the smoke of the salt fires."
Final line, "tachi ya sou ran," means "has it risen to join it," with the binding particle "ya" resolved by the attributive form of the conjectural auxiliary "ran." It shares "tachi," rising, of haze or smoke, with the final line of the preceding poem, 1017, "tachi na kakushi so," and that of the next poem, 1019, "tachi mo koso kike."
