someone might stand and listen.

Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Spring Poems 1019
Headnote: "Composed by a certain man who had secretly brought a woman to a mountain village"
The poet says he will leave his thoughts unspoken, for the mountain path where the spring haze rises is near, and someone might stand and overhear. The headnote shows it was composed by a certain man who had secretly brought a woman to a mountain village. In the setting of a hidden love, it voices a heart that hesitates even to speak its feelings, pivoting on the haze that "rises" and "standing" to overhear.
First line, "omou koto," means "what is in my heart," the same line as the first line of 1017 in this book. Where 1017 says he goes precisely because something is on his mind, this poem says he will leave it unspoken, and the two form a pair.
Second line, "iwade yaminan," means "I will leave it unsaid," with "nan" formed from "na," the irrealis of the perfective "nu," and the auxiliary of intention "mu." The poem breaks after this second line.
Third line, "harugasumi," means "the spring haze," which, because haze "rises," leads to "tachi" in the final line.
Fourth line, "yamaji mo chikashi," means "the mountain path is near," and the poem breaks again here.
Final line, "tachi mo koso kike," means "someone might stand and listen," with "tachi" a pivot word on the haze "rising" and "standing" to overhear. "Mo koso" expresses apprehension, and the binding particle "koso" is resolved by the perfective form "kike."
