Book Five Autumn Poems I 260
Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet says he cannot think anyone will come to lodge in the autumn fields, and wonders whom the pine crickets are waiting for, that they cry so much. Like the preceding poem it echoes "waiting" in the pine cricket, and conveys the futility of insect voices crying on and on in fields where no one comes.
From 254 to 261, this book sets eight untitled poems by Ki no Tsurayuki in a row, turning in order to the voices of autumn insects: the evening cicada, the cricket, and the pine cricket.
The poet, called "Tsurayuki," is Ki no Tsurayuki. A son of Ki no Mochiyuki, he was the leading compiler of the Kokin Wakashū and wrote its kana preface. He served as governor of Tosa among other posts, is known as the author of the Tosa Diary, and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
The first line, "Aki no no ni," means "in the autumn fields," taking up "aki no no ni" in the third line of the preceding poem.
The second line, "kiyadoru hito mo," means "anyone who might come to lodge."
The third line, "omohoezu," means "I cannot think so," and the poem pauses here. 226 of this book also has "omohoezu" in its third line.
The fourth line, "tare o matsumushi," means "waiting for whom, the pine crickets," with "matsu," pine, joined to "matsu," to wait. It is the same conceit as "tare matsumushi zo" in the preceding poem.
In the last line, "kokora" means "so much, so many," and "ran" is an auxiliary conjecturing a cause: "why do they cry so much?"
