a flower you have roped off

Book Six Autumn Poems II 280
Headnote: "Her reply."
She replies that since this is a flower the Cloistered Emperor planted and roped off as his own, the dew too must settle on it so as to look like jewels, worthy of the flower. Taking up his lament, she consoles him by praising not the frailty of the dew but its beauty.
It forms an exchange with the preceding poem, 279.
The poet, Ise, was a daughter of Fujiwara no Tsugukage, governor of Ise, and served Fujiwara no Onshi, a consort of Emperor Uda. Favored by Emperor Uda, she bore him a son, and later had a daughter, Nakatsukasa, by Prince Atsuyoshi. She is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets, and her "Naniwagata mijikaki ashi no fushi no ma mo" is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The first line, "Uetatete," means "planted and raised," showing that it is a flower the Cloistered Emperor planted himself.
In the second line, "shime yuu" means to stretch a rope around something as a mark of possession, showing that the flower is one he treasures.
In the third line, "ba" gives the reason: "since it is such a flower."
In the fourth line, "ya" is an interrogative particle: "so as to look like jewels." It takes up the "white dew" of the preceding poem and likens it to beautiful jewels.
In the last line, "ran," the attributive form of the auxiliary of present conjecture, completes the kakarimusubi pattern with "ya" in the fourth line: "the dew too must be settling."
