Orite miru sode sae nururu ominaeshi tsuyukeki mono to ima ya shiruran

English Translation
Picking it to see,
even my sleeves are drenched—
O maiden flower,
how wet with dew a thing it is,
do you know it now at last
Meaning
Even my sleeves, as I pick it to look, are drenched—maiden flower, do you know now how wet with dew such a thing can be?
Commentary
Book Six Autumn Poems II 281

Headnote: "When Taifu was in the Kōrōden, he picked maiden flowers and sent them from the Fujitsubo."
The poet says that even his sleeves are wet with dew as he picks the maiden flower to look at it, and asks whether she now knows how tearful love can be. Through the dew-soaked maiden flower, he pleads the tears of love.
According to the headnote, when a lady-in-waiting called Taifu was in attendance at the Kōrōden, the poet picked maiden flowers and sent them from the Fujitsubo. From 281 to 284, four poems exchanged between the Minister of the Right, Fujiwara no Morosuke, and Taifu follow one another.
The poet, called "the Minister of the Right," is Fujiwara no Morosuke. The second son of the Regent Fujiwara no Tadahira, he was Minister of the Right when the Gosen Wakashū was compiled. He was called the Lord of Kujō, and his daughter Anshi became empress to Emperor Murakami.

The first line, "Orite miru," means "picking it to look," showing that he has picked the maiden flower.
In the second line, "sae" is an additive particle: "even my sleeves are wet." The dew stands for tears.
The third line, "ominaeshi," calls out to the maiden flower while likening it to Taifu, to whom the flowers were sent.
The fourth line, "tsuyukeki mono to," means "a thing wet with dew," expressing being wet with the tears of love. The next poem, 282, takes up the dew with "kakaran tsuyu o."
In the last line, "ya" is an interrogative particle forming a kakarimusubi pattern with the attributive "ran": "do you know it now?"
