Omoi ni wa ware koso irite madowarure ayanaku kimi ya suzushikaru beki

English Translation
Into the fire
of longing, it is I
who've strayed and suffer—
why then, for no reason,
should you be left so cool
Meaning
It is I who have gone into the fire of longing and am lost in torment. Why, for no reason at all, should you alone stay cool?
Commentary
Book Eleven Love Poems III 782

Headnote: "Sent with a fan to Yamato, lady-in-waiting at the retired emperor's palace."
The poet asks why, when he is lost within the fire of longing, she should for no reason stay cool. Sending a fan that brings coolness, he contrasts himself, burning with love, and her composure as heat and coolness.
According to the headnote, the poem accompanied a fan he sent to a lady-in-waiting named Yamato who served the retired emperor.
The poet, called "the Minister of the Right," was Fujiwara no Morosuke. The second son of Regent Fujiwara no Tadahira, he rose to Minister of the Right. Also called the Kujō Minister of the Right, he took Princess Kinshi as his wife.

In the first line, "omoi ni wa," "omoi" is a pivot word meaning both "longing" and, in its final syllable, "hi," fire.
The second line, "ware koso irite," means "it is I who have entered," with "koso" an emphatic particle.
The third line, "madowarure," means "and am lost in torment," closing in the perfective in answer to "koso" in the second line, a kakarimusubi pattern. The poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "ayanaku kimi ya," means "for no reason, you," with "ya" a rhetorical particle. "Kimi," you, is set against "ware," I, in the second line.
The last line, "suzushikaru beki," means "should you be cool," closing with the attributive "beki" in answer to "ya" in the fourth line, a kakarimusubi pattern. The coolness of the fan he sends is set against the heat of the fire in the first line.
