Michi nareru konomi tazunete kokorozashi ari to miru ni zo ne o ba mashikeru

English Translation
Seeking out for me
these fruits of the tree of the Way,
when I see in them
the depth of your kind heart,
my weeping grows the more
Meaning
When I see how deep your kindness is in seeking out for me these seeds of the tree of the enlightened Way, my weeping only grows the more.
Commentary
Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems III 1227

Headnote: "Reply."
The poet says that seeing the depth of kindness in one who sought out these fruits of the tree of the Way, his weeping only increased. Thanking Shin'en for his thoughtfulness, he conveys how his grief for his late wife has deepened all the more.
It is the reply of the Minister of the Right Fujiwara no Morosuke to Priest Shin'en's preceding poem.
The poet, "the Minister of the Right," is Fujiwara no Morosuke. The second son of Fujiwara no Tadahira, he supported Emperor Murakami's court alongside his elder brother Saneyori and became Minister of the Right. He was known as the Lord of Kujō, and his daughter Anshi became Emperor Murakami's empress.

The first line, "Michi nareru," means "of the Way fulfilled," taking up "hotoke ni nareru" in the fourth line of the preceding poem.
The second line, "konomi tazunete," is a pivot word on "konomi," both the fruit of a tree and this person: seeking out the seed rosary, and caring for me in my grief. It takes up "konomi" in the last line of the preceding poem.
The third line, "kokorozashi," means "kindness, thoughtfulness."
The fourth line, "ari to miru ni zo," means "when I see that it is there," with "zo" an emphatic binding particle.
The last line, "ne o ba mashikeru," is a pivot word on "ne," both the sound of weeping and the root of a tree, associated with "fruit." The "zo" of the fourth line is closed by the attributive "keru." It answers "masan" in the second line of the preceding poem.
