Book Six Autumn Poems II 292
Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet says that though he thinks himself no dew, he passes the autumn night until dawn staying up, as dew stays settled. One who passes the night sleepless is overlaid with dew lying on the grass all night.
From 290 to 292, three poems stand together that overlay one who stays up all night with the dew. This poem is the third.
The poet, called "the Minister of the Right," is Fujiwara no Morosuke. The second son of the Regent Fujiwara no Tadahira, he was Minister of the Right when the Gosen Wakashū was compiled. He was called the Lord of Kujō, and his daughter Anshi became empress to Emperor Murakami.
The first line, "Tsuyu naranu," means "not dew," denying, against "tsuyu wa waga mi no" in 290, that he is dew.
In the second line, "do" gives a definite concession: "though I think of myself so."
The third line, "aki no yo o," means "the autumn night," the same words as the first line of 290 in this book.
The fourth line, "kaku koso akase," means "thus I pass it till dawn," with the particle "koso" and the perfective "akase" forming a kakarimusubi pattern. The poem pauses here.
In the last line, "oki" is a pivot word joining "oku," for dew to settle, and "oku," to stay awake: "staying up all the while." It stands in inversion with the fourth line, and it is the same pivot word as "okiitsutsu" in 285 of this book.
