Book Seven Autumn Poems III 403
Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet says that when one crosses the autumn hillsides without a thought, everyone ends up wearing a brocade that no one wove. It likens the leaves falling on clothes along the mountain path to brocade worn by travelers.
Taking up the poems before it that liken the leaves to brocade, this one sings of people wearing that brocade.
The poet is listed as "anonymous," and the composer's name has not come down to us. The text gives the poet as "yomibito mo," which is treated here as "anonymous."
The first line, "Naozari ni," means "without a thought, casually."
The second line, "aki no yamabe o," means "the autumn hillsides."
The third line, "koekureba," means "when one comes across them."
The fourth line, "oranu nishiki o," means "a brocade no one wove," likening the leaves to brocade. 409 of this book places the same "oranu nishiki" in its second line.
The last line, "kinu hito zo naki," means "there is no one not wearing it," with "zo" and the attributive "naki" forming a kakarimusubi pattern.
