On the mountain path,
the leg-wearying one, they lie,
the cherry blossoms,
and I take them for a snow
of spring that never melts.

Book One Spring Poems 65
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poet sees the cherry petals scattered over the mountain path as a spring snow that never melts. Unlike snow that melts away, the petals that remain on the ground are called "snow that never vanishes."
First line, "ashihiki no," is a pillow word for "yama" (mountain). The next poem opens with the same line.
Second line, "yamaji ni chireru," means "scattered on the mountain path."
Third line, "sakurabana," names the petals lying strewn about.
Fourth line, "kiesenu haru no," means "of spring that never melts," using the same words as "kiesenu yuki" in poem 41 of this book. Where poem 41 saw blooming cherries as snow, this one sees fallen cherries as snow.
Final line, "yuki ka to zo miru," closes in the attributive "miru" in response to "zo."
