Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems II 1170
Headnote: "When the woman I had been visiting always seemed to keep her heart closed, and though months and years had passed, I sent word asking whether it was still to be like this even now."
The poet says that, like the reeds at the water's edge on Naniwa Bay growing old node by node, she passes her aging years resenting the other's heart. Reproached for staying closed despite years of visits, she answers that she is the one who has cause for resentment, entrusting the sorrow of her old age to the nodes of the reeds.
According to the headnote, a man had long visited a woman whose heart always seemed closed and sent word asking whether, after all those years, it was still to be so; this appears to be the reply.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Naniwagata," is the tidal flats of Naniwa in Settsu, known for reeds.
The second line, "migiwa no ashi no," means "of the reeds at the water's edge."
The third line, "oi ga yo ni," means "in the world of old age," with "yo" joining world and the node of a reed, overlaying old age in keeping with the reeds.
The fourth line, "uramite zo furu," means "I pass my days resenting," with "zo" an emphatic binding particle closed by the attributive "furu."
The last line, "hito no kokoro o," means "your heart," inverted with the fourth line. The next poem is also an exchange about resentment.
