Book Nine Love Poems I 595
Headnote: "Reply."
The poet answers that the moment he hears she feels this pain with the same heart as his, he forgets all about himself and she alone is dear to him. Answering her question, he tells her that his feeling for her comes before any thought of himself.
It is a reply to the preceding poem by Nakatsukasa. It answers "onaji kokoro ni" with "onaji kokoro to."
The poet, Minamoto no Saneakira, was a son of Minamoto no Kintada. Known for exchanging love poems with Nakatsukasa, he is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals.
The first line, "Wabishisa o," means "the pain."
The second line, "onaji kokoro to," means "that you feel it with the same heart," taking up "onaji kokoro ni" in the second line of the preceding poem.
The third line, "kiku kara ni," means "the moment I hear."
The fourth line, "waga mi o sutete," means "setting myself aside."
In the last line, "kanashi" means "dear, beloved," and the particle "zo" and the attributive "kanashiki" form a kakarimusubi pattern.
