Sumiyoshi no matsu ni tachiyoru shiranami no kaeru ori ni ya ne wa nakaruramu

English Translation
Like the white waves
that come up to the pines
at Sumiyoshi,
when I am turned back now,
must I cry aloud as well
Meaning
Like the white waves that rise to the pines of Sumiyoshi and then roll back, now that I am turned away at your gate, must I too cry aloud?
Commentary
Book Ten Love Poems II 661

Headnote: "He went to see someone he knew after not visiting for a long time, and was turned back at the gate."
The poet asks whether, like the white waves that come up to the pines of Sumiyoshi and roll back, he must cry aloud now that he is turned away. He layers the grief of being sent away at the gate after a long absence with white waves that come in and draw back.
According to the headnote, he went to see someone he knew after a long absence and was turned back at the gate. Following the preceding poem, 660, it sings of the grief of being sent away after coming to call.
The poet, Mibu no Tadamine, was one of the compilers of the Kokin Wakashū. He is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, and his "ariake no tsurenaku mieshi wakare yori" is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

The first line, "Sumiyoshi no," means "of Sumiyoshi," a poetic place in Settsu.
The second line, "matsu ni tachiyoru," means "coming up to the pines," layered with the poet's visit.
The third line, "shiranami no," means "the white waves." The first three lines form a preface leading to "kaeru" in the fourth line.
In the fourth line, "kaeru" is a pivot word joining waves that "roll back" and the poet who "goes home." "Ya" is an interrogative particle. The line echoes "kaesu" in the last line of the preceding poem.
The last line, "ne wa nakaruramu," means "must I cry aloud?" with "ne" also suggesting the sound of the waves. It closes with the attributive "ramu" in answer to "ya" in the fourth line, a kakarimusubi pattern.
