Book Ten Love Poems II 660
Headnote: "He went to a woman's house, but she sent him back without meeting him, so he had these words taken inside."
The poet says that though he may reproach her, it is he who suffers, since he came all this way only to be sent home in vain. He voices the grief of being turned away at the door by piling up words associated with a fine robe.
According to the headnote, he went to a woman's house but was sent back without meeting her, so he sent these words in from outside. 622 in this book also places "karakoromo" in its third line, singing of grief at a night spent without meeting.
The poet, called "Tsurayuki," is Ki no Tsurayuki. He was one of the compilers of the Kokin Wakashū and served as Governor of Tosa, among other posts. Known also as the author of the Tosa Diary, he is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals.
In the first line, "urami" is a pivot word joining "urami," reproach, and "urami," looking at the lining of a robe, with "ura" an associated word with "karakoromo" in the third line.
The second line, "mi koso tsurakere," means "it is I who suffer," with "koso" emphatic and closing with the perfective "kere," a kakarimusubi pattern. The poem pauses here.
The third line, "karakoromo," is a fine robe, leading to "ki" in the fourth line. It is the same word as the third line of 622 in this book.
In the fourth line, "ki" is a pivot word joining "ki," to wear a robe, and "ki," to come: "though I came, in vain."
The last line, "kaesu to omoeba," means "when I think I am sent back," with "kaesu" also suggesting turning a robe inside out, an associated word with the robe.
