Book Eleven Love Poems III 723
Headnote: "Sent to a woman he had at last managed to meet, when circumstances kept him from meeting her again."
The poet says that ever since he was wet with the dew under the trees of Ōsaka, his sleeves have never dried. He likens the night they finally met to being wet with Ōsaka's dew, and pleads that his sleeves never dry from the tears he sheds at not meeting her since.
According to the headnote, he sent the poem to a woman he had managed to meet with great difficulty, when something kept him from seeing her again.
The poet, Fujiwara no Kanesuke, was a son of Fujiwara no Toshimoto and served as Middle Counselor. Called the Tsutsumi Middle Counselor for his residence on the banks of the Kamo River, he was a great-grandfather of Murasaki Shikibu. His "mika no hara wakite nagaruru izumigawa" is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
In the first line, "Ausaka no," Ōsaka is a famous poetic place on the border of Yamashiro and Ōmi, echoing "au," to meet, and expressing that they had finally met. Ōsaka Hill also appears in the opening poem of this book, 700.
The second line, "ko no shitatsuyu ni," means "by the dew beneath the trees."
The third line, "nureshi yori," means "ever since I was wet," likening the night of their meeting to being wet with dew.
The fourth line, "waga koromode wa," means "my sleeves."
The last line, "ima mo kawakazu," means "are not dry even now," referring to sleeves kept wet by tears of grief at not meeting.
