Book Twelve Love Poems IV 871
Headnote: "Ōe no Chisato, his feelings drifting from a woman he had been visiting, had someone tell her he had gone far away and stopped coming for a long time; when, on a night she slept in sorrow, she dreamed that he had come, she sent this in doubt."
The poet asks whether, deceived by the empty sign of a dream, she will become one who loses in waking life. Doubting whether the man who appeared in her dream truly came, she voices the fear of trusting a dream and being betrayed.
According to the headnote, Ōe no Chisato, losing interest in a woman he had been visiting, had someone tell her he had gone far away and stopped coming for a long time, but on a night when she slept in sorrow she dreamed that he had come, so she sent this poem in doubt. The next poem, 872, was sent again by the same woman after receiving Chisato's answer, and the two form a pair. Ōe no Chisato was a son of Ōe no Otondo, known as a poet.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Hakanakaru," means "fleeting."
The second line, "yume no shirushi ni," means "by the sign of a dream," that is, its omen or message.
The third line, "hakararete," means "deceived," with "re" a passive auxiliary. It repeats the sound of "hakanakaru" in the first line.
The fourth line, "utsutsu ni makuru," means "losing in waking life," contrasting "utsutsu," reality, with "yume," dream, in the second line.
The last line, "mi to ya narinan," means "shall I become one," with "ya" an interrogative binding particle closed by the attributive "nan."
