Mitsu no mori moru kono koro no nagame ni wa urami mo aezu yodo no kawanami

English Translation
The Wood of Mitsu,
where these days the rain leaks through—
in such long brooding
I cannot even finish my reproach,
like the stalled waves of the Yodo
Meaning
In these long rains that leak through the Wood of Mitsu, lost in brooding, I cannot even finish my reproach; like the river waves of the Yodo, I only linger and stall.
Commentary
Book Fourteen Love Poems VI 995

Headnote: "Reply."
The reply says that in the long rains leaking through the Wood of Mitsu, the speaker cannot even finish reproaching, but lingers like the stalled waves of the Yodo. Taking up the Wood of Mitsu and Yodo directly from the preceding poem, it answers that brooding in the long rains leaves no room even to put resentment into words.
According to the headnote, it is a reply to the preceding poem, 994. Where that poem blamed the stalled meetings on the other's coldness, this one points to the brooding of the long rains, answering that the speaker too is caught in stagnation.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.

The first line, "Mitsu no mori," means "the Wood of Mitsu," taking up the third line of the preceding poem as it stands.
The second line, "moru kono koro no," means "these days when the rain leaks," with "moru" joining the rain's leaking and guarding the wood.
The third line, "nagame ni wa," means "in the long rains," with "nagame" joining long rain and the gazing of one lost in thought.
The fourth line, "urami mo aezu," means "unable even to finish my reproach," with "aezu" meaning that something cannot be carried through.
The last line, "yodo no kawanami," means "the river waves of Yodo," with "yodo" joining the place name and "yodomu," to stagnate, taking up the second line of the preceding poem. Ending on a noun, it leaves a lingering resonance.
