Au koto o yodo ni ari chō mitsu no mori tsurashi to kimi o mitsuru koro kana

English Translation
Meeting, they say, stalls
at Yodo where there stands
the Wood of Mitsu—
so cruel I have come to see you
all through these recent days
Meaning
Like the Wood of Mitsu that stands at Yodo, where meetings, they say, stall and stagnate, I have come to see you as cruel all through these recent days.
Commentary
Book Fourteen Love Poems VI 994

Headnote: "Sent to someone."
The poet says that, like the Wood of Mitsu at Yodo, where meeting is said to stagnate, he has lately come to see the beloved as cruel. Linking the neighbouring place names of Yodo and the Wood of Mitsu in Yamashiro, he voices his bitterness at meetings that have come to a standstill.
According to the headnote, it was sent to the one the poet loved, and the reply is placed in the next poem, 995, forming an exchange. It is the opening poem of Love Poems VI. Where the closing poem, 1074, ends with the longing to meet by naming Ōsakayama, the Slope of Meeting, this one begins with "au koto o," so the start and end of the book answer each other through the word "meet."
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.

The first line, "Au koto o," means "meeting," announcing the theme at the outset. It answers "Ōsakayama" in the closing poem, 1074, through the word "au," to meet.
The second line, "yodo ni ari chō," means "which is said to be at Yodo," with "yodo" joining the place name Yodo and "yodomu," to stagnate. "Chō" is a contraction of "to iu."
The third line, "mitsu no mori," is the Wood of Mitsu near Yodo, and its "mitsu" chimes with "mitsuru" in the last line. The same "mitsu no mori" opens the next poem.
The fourth line, "tsurashi to kimi o," means "you, as cruel."
The last line, "mitsuru koro kana," means "these days in which I have seen," with "tsuru" an auxiliary of completion and "kana" a final particle of exclamation.
