you mean never to let me see

Book Thirteen Love Poems V 993
Headnote: "Again, the man."
The poet says that he only feels the river rising, and asks whether she means never to show him, for his sake, the happy shallows. Taking up the river of the preceding poem, he overlays the rising water that hides any shallows to cross with the coldness of a lover who will not grant a meeting.
According to the headnote, the man sent this again after the preceding poem, closing the five-poem exchange that began with 989. It is the closing poem of Love Poems V. Where the opening poem, 891, sought a chance to meet through seaweed in the sea of Ise, this one seeks a meeting through the shallows of a river, so the beginning and end of the book answer each other through images of sea and river.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Mizu masaru," means "the water rises," taking up "iyamasari" in the preceding poem.
The second line, "kokochi nomi shite," means "that is all I feel," hinting that tears make the waters rise.
The third line, "waga tame ni," means "for my sake."
The fourth line, "ureshiki se o ba," means "the happy shallows," with "se" overlaying shallows and a chance to meet. It takes up "kawa" in the preceding poem.
The last line, "miseji to ya suru," means "do you mean not to show me," with "ji" a negative auxiliary of intention and "ya" an interrogative binding particle closed by the attributive "suru." As the opening poem, 891, ended in seeking a chance to meet, this one closes the book with the longing for a meeting.
