知られじなわが人知れぬ心もて
君をおもひの中に燃ゆとは

Roma-ji: Shirareji na waga hito shirenu kokoro mote kimi o omoi no naka ni moyu to wa
English Translation: You will never know
that with this heart of mine
that no one has seen
I burn within the fire
of all my love for you
Meaning: You will never know it: that with a heart no one has seen, I am burning in the fire of my love for you.
Commentary: Book Fourteen Love Poems VI 1017

Headnote: "Someone serving in the same household had feelings for another but kept them hidden without a word; on some occasion, he wrote this and dropped it nearby."
The poet says the beloved will never know that, with a heart no one has seen, he burns within the fire of his love. Likening an unconfessed love to a fire that burns unseen, he tells of its pain.
According to the headnote, someone serving in the same place loved another but held it in without speaking, and on some occasion wrote this and dropped it near the beloved. Following the smoke of Fuji in 1014 in this book, it too speaks of a love that burns in the fire of longing.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.

The first line, "Shirareji na," means "you will not know, will you," with "ji" a negative auxiliary of conjecture and "na" a final particle of exclamation. The poem pauses here, and by inversion it denies in advance what the fourth and last lines say.
The second line, "waga hito shirenu," means "my secret, known to no one."
The third line, "kokoro mote," means "with a heart," with "mote" a contraction of "mochite."
The fourth line, "kimi o omoi no," means "of the fire of my longing for you," with the "hi" of "omoi" also meaning fire. It is the same pun as in "omoi ni moyuru" in the fourth line of 1014 in this book.
The last line, "naka ni moyu to wa," means "that I burn within it," with "moyu," to burn, an associated word with the fire of the fourth line. It closes by turning back to the first line.
