Natsugoromo mi ni wa naru tomo waga tame ni usuki kokoro wa kakezu mo aranan

English Translation
A summer garment
grows close to the skin, and yet
though you grow close to me,
a heart as thin as that cloth
lay not upon me, I pray
Meaning
Even if you grow used to me as a summer robe grows used to the body, please do not drape over me a heart as thin as that summer cloth.
Commentary
Book Fourteen Love Poems VI 1019

Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poet asks that, even if they grow close as a summer robe grows close to the body, the beloved not lay upon him a heart as thin as that robe. Overlaying the draping of a thin summer garment with a heart that wears thin as intimacy grows, he warns in advance against a change of heart.
1054 in this book also speaks of the thinness of a summer robe, lamenting a thin heart through summer clothes sent as a gift, so two poems on summer robes are set in the first and second halves of the book.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.

The first line, "Natsugoromo," means "a summer robe," its thinness leading to "usuki kokoro," a thin heart, in the fourth line. It is the same word as the third line of 1054 in this book.
The second line, "mi ni wa naru tomo," means "even if it grows familiar to the body," with "naru" joining a garment settling to the body and people growing intimate.
The third line, "waga tame ni," means "toward me."
The fourth line, "usuki kokoro wa," means "a thin heart," overlaying the thinness of the summer robe with shallowness of heart.
The last line, "kakezu mo aranan," means "please do not lay it upon me," with "kake" overlaying the draping of a robe and the setting of the heart, an associated word with the summer robe. "Nan" is a final particle of wishing that another will act.
