Book Fourteen Love Poems VI 1029
Headnote: "Composed when she sent an umbrella to a man on a rainy night to call him to her, and he did not come."
The poet says she thought he would come holding the umbrella toward her, yet Mount Mikasa's name was of no use and the rain leaked through. Her umbrella proved useless and he did not come, and she reproaches him by likening it to rain leaking through an umbrella.
According to the headnote, on a rainy night she sent an umbrella to a man to call him, but he did not come; his reply is placed in the next poem, 1030. 1011 in this book also concerns a man who sent for an umbrella on a rainy night, so poems on rain and umbrellas are set again.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us.
The first line, "Sashite ko to," means "come holding it up," with "sashi" joining holding up an umbrella and heading toward someone. "Ko" is the imperative of "ku," to come.
The second line, "omoishi mono o," means "I thought, and yet," with "mono o" an adversative conjunctive particle.
The third line, "mikasayama," is Mount Mikasa in Yamato, with "mikasa" also meaning an honored hat or umbrella. It appears again in the third line of the next poem.
The fourth line, "kai naku ame no," means "to no avail, the rain."
The last line, "morinikeru kana," means "how it leaked," speaking of rain leaking through the umbrella. "Morume" in the first line of the next poem takes up this "mori" and turns it to watching eyes.
