Book Fifteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1080
Headnote: "When she had not yet become empress and the other consorts seemed jealous, the emperor stopped by her chamber in secret; without meeting him, she sent him this."
The poet asks him to stand outside a little while, since tongues are busy, promising to come out and brush away the dew that has settled through the evening. Explaining that she cannot meet him at once for fear of the other consorts' jealousy, she shows her tender care by offering to brush the dew from the emperor's robes herself.
According to the headnote, when she had not yet become empress and the consorts around her seemed jealous, the emperor stopped by her chamber in secret, and she sent him this without meeting him.
The poet, "the Saga Empress," is Tachibana no Kachiko. Empress of Emperor Saga and mother of Emperor Ninmyō, she was also called Empress Danrin because she founded the temple Danrinji.
The first line, "Koto shigeshi," means "tongues are busy," showing her wariness of the other consorts' eyes. The poem pauses here.
The second line, "shibashi wa tatere," means "stand there for a while," with "tatere" the imperative of "tateri." She asks the emperor to wait outside. The poem pauses here.
The third line, "yoi no ma ni," means "during the evening."
The fourth line, "okeramu tsuyu wa," means "the dew that must have settled," with "ra" the continuative "ri" and "mu" conjecture. She thinks of the night dew settling on the emperor's robes.
The last line, "idete harawamu," means "I will come out and brush it away," with "mu" expressing intention. She promises that, after he waits a little, she will come out herself to receive him.
