Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems II 1148
Headnote: "A page girl of a certain household, waiting at the Shishinden to watch the Gosechi dances, lost her shoes; Lord Sukemuto, then a Chamberlain, lent her a pair, and on returning them."
The poet asks when she could ever forget the seaweed from the offing that was gathered by diving through the tossing waves. Likening the kindness of lending her shoes amid the jostling crowd at the Gosechi to a diver plunging through rough waves for seaweed, she hides "kutsu," shoes, in "mokuzu" and conveys her thanks.
According to the headnote, a page girl serving a certain household lost her shoes while waiting at the Shishinden to watch the Gosechi dances, and Lord Sukemuto, then a Chamberlain, lent her a pair; she sent this when returning them. The reply follows in the next poem, forming an exchange.
The poet is listed as anonymous, and the composer's name has not come down to us. According to the headnote, she was a page girl serving in a certain household.
The first line, "Tachisawagu," means "tossing and clamoring," likening the crowd jostling to watch the Gosechi to tossing waves. 1159 of this book also has "tachisawagareshi" in its second line.
The second line, "namima o wakete," means "parting the waves."
The third line, "kazukiteshi," means "that you dove and brought up," with "teshi" the perfective and past auxiliaries.
The fourth line, "oki no mokuzu o," means "the seaweed of the offing," hiding "kutsu," shoes, in "mokuzu." The same line appears in the second line of the next poem.
The last line, "itsu ka wasuren," means "when could I forget," with "ka" a rhetorical binding particle closed by the attributive "n," meaning she will never forget.
