do you find all things so sad

Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Poems IV 1292
Headnote: "Sent to a woman who was said to have been forgotten by her lover."
The poet asks how things stand between the two, and whether the sound of the wind now makes her sad. To a woman said to have been forgotten by her lover, the poet asks with concern whether the sound of the autumn wind grieves her.
According to the headnote, it was sent to a woman said to have been forgotten by her lover. The next poem is Ise's reply, and the two form an exchange.
The poet is anonymous and the name is not known.
The first line, "Yo no naka wa," means "the bond between you."
The second line, "ika ni ya ika ni," means "how is it, how is it," repeating the words to press the question. The poem pauses here.
The third line, "kaze no oto o," means "the sound of the wind," suggesting the autumn wind and a hint of "aki," weariness.
The fourth line, "kiku ni mo ima wa," means "now, when you hear it."
The last line, "mono ya kanashiki," means "is all so sad," with the interrogative binding particle "ya" closed by the attributive "kanashiki."
