Yo no naka wa isa tomo isa ya kaze no oto wa aki ni aki sou kokochi koso sure

English Translation
How goes it between us?
Well, who can say, who can say—
but the sound of wind
feels like autumn piled on autumn,
weariness on weariness
Meaning
How things stand between us—well, who can say? But the sound of the wind feels like autumn heaped upon autumn, his weariness of me added to the season's sorrow.
Commentary
Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Poems IV 1293

Headnote: "Reply."
The poet answers, "Who can say," and says the sound of the wind feels like weariness added to autumn. Evading the question of the preceding poem, she joins "aki," autumn, with "aki," weariness, in the sound of the autumn wind, hinting at a deepening grief at being tired of.
It is Ise's reply to the preceding poem.
The poet, Ise, was a daughter of Fujiwara no Tsugukage, Governor of Ise, and served Fujiwara no Onshi, consort of Emperor Uda. She received the emperor's favor and later bore Nakatsukasa to Prince Atsuyoshi. One of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, she is represented in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu by "Naniwagata mijikaki ashi no fushi no ma mo."

The first line, "Yo no naka wa," means "the bond between us," repeating the first line of the preceding poem.
The second line, "isa tomo isa ya," means "well, who can say," repeating "isa" to evade an answer. It responds to "ika ni ya ika ni" in the preceding poem's second line. The poem pauses here.
The third line, "kaze no oto wa," means "the sound of the wind," taking up "kaze no oto o" in the preceding poem.
The fourth line, "aki ni aki sou," is a pivot word on the second "aki," both autumn and weariness: to autumn's sorrow is added the sorrow of being tired of.
The last line, "kokochi koso sure," means "so it feels," with "koso" closed by the realis "sure."
