Book Nineteen Parting Poems 1345
Headnote: "Sent to someone going somewhere by boat."
The poet says that she will not be left behind but will ride in the traveler's heart, rowed along, and asks to be sought on the waves though no boat is seen. To one leaving by boat, she declares she will go too, riding in his heart, and joins "kogaru," to be rowed, with "kogaru," to burn with longing.
According to the headnote, she sent this to someone going somewhere by boat. The next poem is the reply, and the two form an exchange. From here the book sets two exchanges in a row with travelers departing by boat.
The poet, Ise, was a daughter of Fujiwara no Tsugukage, Governor of Ise, and served Fujiwara no Onshi, consort of Emperor Uda. She received the emperor's favor and later bore Nakatsukasa to Prince Atsuyoshi. One of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, she is represented in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu by "Naniwagata mijikaki ashi no fushi no ma mo."
The first line, "Okurezu zo," means "without being left behind," with "zo" an emphatic binding particle.
The second line, "kokoro ni norite," means "riding in your heart," overlaid with boarding a boat.
The third line, "kogaru beki," is a pivot word on "kogaru," both being rowed and burning with longing. It closes the "zo" of the first line with the attributive "beki," and the poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "nami ni motomeyo," means "seek me upon the waves," in the imperative.
The last line, "fune miezu tomo," means "though no boat is seen," with "tomo" a concessive supposition. "Ride," "row," and "waves" are associated words with "boat."
