be turning into spring

Commentary
Book Twenty Congratulatory Poems 1374

Headnote: "At a place where someone came of age, wearing wisteria blossoms in the hair."
The poet says that the flowers of the surging waves have bloomed, and wonders whether the wind in the pines that wait a thousand years is turning to spring. Seeing the wisteria worn in the hair as "wisteria waves" swaying like breakers, and since wisteria twines on pines, the poet imagines even the pine wind turning spring-like, celebrating the brightness of the coming of age.
According to the headnote, it was composed at someone's coming-of-age ceremony while wearing wisteria in the hair. Following the young pines of the preceding poem, it too sings of pines.
The poet is anonymous and the name is not known.

The first line, "Uchiyosuru," means "surging," modifying the "waves" of the second line.
The second line, "nami no hana koso," is "flowers of the waves," a figure overlaying the wisteria of the headnote as "wisteria waves." "Koso" is an emphatic binding particle.
The third line, "sakinikere," means "they have bloomed," closing the "koso" of the second line with the realis "kere." The poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "chiyo matsukaze ya," seems to pivot on "matsu," both "waiting" a thousand years and "pine." Wisteria is sung of as blooming draped on pines. "Ya" is an interrogative binding particle.
The last line, "haru ni naruran," means "is it turning to spring," closing the "ya" of the fourth line with the attributive "ran."
