Tamazusa ni namida no kakaru kokochi shite shigururu sora ni kari no naku naru - Senzai Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

玉梓に涙のかかる心地して
時雨るる空に雁の鳴くなる

Roma-ji: Tamazusa ni namida no kakaru kokochi shite shigururu sora ni kari no naku naru
English Translation: It feels as though
my tears were falling down upon
a letter from afar,
as in the sky of winter showers
I hear the wild geese crying
Meaning: It feels as if tears were falling on a letter, as I hear the wild geese crying in the sky of winter showers.

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a poem on winter showers when the monk En'i urged various people to compose hundred-poem sequences"
A poem on winter showers from the hundred-poem sequences composed at Saigyō's urging. Hearing the wild geese crying in the sky of showers, the poet says, it feels as if tears were falling on a letter. Drawing on the tale of geese carrying letters, he likens the showers to tears and the geese crossing the sky to messengers bearing letters, expressing the sorrow of longing for someone far away.
The author, "Yomibito shirazu," indicates that the poet's name has not come down.
Like the preceding poem, 414, it is a poem on showers from the hundred-poem sequences composed at Saigyō's urging. The tale of geese carrying letters comes from the Chinese story of Su Wu of the Han, held captive by the Xiongnu, who tied a letter to a goose's foot to send word home.

First line, "tamazusa ni": "tamazusa" means a letter or message, linked by the tale of geese bearing letters to "kari" in the last line.
Second line, "namida no kakaru": "kakaru" is to fall upon, likening the showers to tears.
Third line, "kokochi shite": "with the feeling that."
Fourth line, "shigururu sora ni": "shiguru" is for showers to fall. The showers overlap with tears, linking sky and letter.
Fifth line, "kari no naku naru": "naru," the attributive of "nari" inferring from sound, "I hear the wild geese crying."
