the winter showers have come

Commentary
Book Six Winter Poems 416

Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Winter Showers at a Mountain Dwelling'"
Composed on the topic of winter showers at a mountain dwelling. Crossing the ridge, the poet says, the showers made their way with a patter from oak leaf to oak leaf and came straight on to his eaves. He captures the approach of showers from beyond the mountain by the moving sound of drops on oak leaves, depicting the moment showers arrive at a mountain home.
The author, "Minamoto no Nakayori," was a poet of the cloistered-rule period, but little is known of his life.
It shares the words "yagate" and "nokiba" with 414 of this book. Where 414 sings of moonlight slipping in at the eaves after the showers have gone, this poem sings of showers until they reach the eaves, catching their coming and going from the opposite direction.

First line, "minegoe ni": "crossing the peak," showing the showers coming from beyond the mountain.
Second line, "nara no ha tsutai": "from oak leaf to oak leaf." Like "nara no hiroha ni shigure furu nari" in 401 of this book, it sings of the sound of showers on oak leaves.
Third line, "otozurete": a pivot word joining "otozuru," to make a sound, and "otozuru," to visit.
Fourth line, "yagate nokiba ni": "yagate" means "straight away, just so," the same words as "yagate sashiiru" and "nokiba" in 414 of this book.
Fifth line, "shigure kinikeri": "keri" expresses realization, "the showers have come."
